Sony has issued a significant system update for PS5 today, as promised on the official PlayStation blog yesterday. The update brings a slew of new capabilities to the next-gen platform.
Support for M.2 SSDs is without a doubt the most significant feature. Sony’s latest 21.02-04.00.00 update officially opens the PS5’s expansion port, enabling users to add PCIe 4.0 M storage to the system’s very limited internal storage. There are two options, with capacities ranging from 250 GB to 4 TB. These drives should have a minimum sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s and a heat sink to keep temperatures in control for more consistent performance, according to Sony’s specifications.

Sony’s latest PS5 update also contains some interesting new capabilities, such as 3D audio compatibility for built-in TV speakers, which allows for three-dimensional sound without the need for a separate surround setup. The function works by using the built-in microphone on the DualSense wireless controller to assess the acoustics of a space.

- You may utilize PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSDs with capacities ranging from 250 GB to 4 TB.
- Make sure your PS5 is switched off and the AC power cable is disconnected before inserting or removing your M.2 SSD.
- To utilize M.2 SSD storage, switch your PS5 off and put your M.2 SSD into the expansion slot. When you switch on your PS5, your M.2 SSD will be formatted and ready to use.
