Sony has issued a significant system update for PS5 today, as promised on the official PlayStation blog yesterday. The update brings a slew of new capabilities to the next-gen platform.

Support for M.2 SSDs is without a doubt the most significant feature. Sony’s latest 21.02-04.00.00 update officially opens the PS5’s expansion port, enabling users to add PCIe 4.0 M storage to the system’s very limited internal storage. There are two options, with capacities ranging from 250 GB to 4 TB. These drives should have a minimum sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s and a heat sink to keep temperatures in control for more consistent performance, according to Sony’s specifications.

Sony’s latest PS5 update also contains some interesting new capabilities, such as 3D audio compatibility for built-in TV speakers, which allows for three-dimensional sound without the need for a separate surround setup. The function works by using the built-in microphone on the DualSense wireless controller to assess the acoustics of a space.

The following are the main characteristics of this system software update:

  • You may now utilize M.2 SSD storage by inserting an M.2 SSD into your PS5 console’s expansion port. You can put PS5 and PS4 games on M.2 SSD storage and play them straight from there, just as you can with your PS5 console storage.
  • You may utilize PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSDs with capacities ranging from 250 GB to 4 TB.
  • Make sure your PS5 is switched off and the AC power cable is disconnected before inserting or removing your M.2 SSD.
  • To utilize M.2 SSD storage, switch your PS5 off and put your M.2 SSD into the expansion slot. When you switch on your PS5, your M.2 SSD will be formatted and ready to use.
  • Go to your game library, click the settings button, and then choose [Transfer Games and Apps] to move a PS5 or PS4 game from console storage or USB extended storage to M.2 SSD storage. Then choose [Move] after selecting the game you wish to move.
  • Go to [Settings] [Storage] [Installation Destination], choose [PS5 Games and Apps] or [PS4 Games and Apps], and then [M.2 SSD Storage] as the installation location to install games to M.2 SSD storage by default.
  • Through your TV speakers, you may now listen to 3D audio.
    • Go to [Settings] [Sound] [Audio Output] and switch on [Activate 3D Audio for TV Speakers] to enable 3D audio for your TV speakers.
    • You can also use the microphone on your DualSense wireless controller to assess the acoustics of your area and apply the 3D audio setting that’s best for your space.
  • We’ve changed the following on your game’s home screen:
    • If you have several versions of the same game loaded on various platforms, they will now display on your home screen individually.
    • It’s now simpler to distinguish between different game versions. The particular platform, such as PS5 or PS4, is indicated by icons.
  • We’ve updated the following in (Game Library):
    • The [Installed] tab has been moved to the top of the screen, making it simpler to discover games that aren’t on your home screen and giving you faster access to your media gallery.
    • Each game’s tile now clearly displays its platform under the [Installed] tab (such as PS5 or PS4). Different platform versions of a game will now display individually, exactly as they do on your home screen.
    • When you’re entitled to several versions of a game, game tiles now show the number of versions accessible to you under the [Your Collection] page.
    • Games may now be hidden much more rapidly.
  • We’ve updated the following in Game Base:
    • You may now perform the following from the Game Base control menu:
      • From the Game Base control menu in the control center, you may now access party text conversations and send messages.
      • You may now remove a party if you are the owner. Pick the party you wish to remove from the GameBase control menu, then select [Delete Party] from the… (more) menu. If you eliminate a party, all of its members will be removed as well.
      • Under the [Friends] page, you can now check how many of your friends are online, busy, or offline.
      • Multiple friend requests may now be accepted, declined, or cancelled at the same time. Select [Received Requests] or [Sent Requests] from the (Select Multiple) option under the [Friend Requests] tab.
    • We’ve updated the following in (Trophies):
      • The trophy tracker in the control center now allows you to keep track of up to five awards each game.
      • To begin monitoring a trophy, first choose one and then [Start Tracking].
      • You can quickly access information about the trophies you’ve added to your trophy tracker while playing a game.
      • You may also see your trophy tracker in pin-to-side mode while playing to get details about your trophies.
      • The awards will now be presented vertically rather than horizontally while viewing game trophy lists. You may now view additional information about each trophy without having to choose it.
  • We’ve updated the following in the control center:
    • You may now more easily personalize your control center. You may rearrange all of the controls at the bottom of the screen.
    • You’ll get a short introduction to some of the control center’s main functions the first time you access it.
  • You may now access the following features if you activate the screen reader:
