Fact or Fiction: Can You Tell Which 5 Common Gambling Beliefs Are Total Myths?

Spent two years believing that slots pay better at night. Read it on a forum. Made sense – fewer players online, better odds for me, right?

Tested it for a month. Played same games, same stakes, tracked results at 2 AM versus 2 PM. No difference whatsoever. Lost the same percentage either way.

That’s when I started questioning every “common knowledge” gambling belief I’d accepted without proof. Turns out, most of them are complete fiction. Here are five myths I finally tested myself.

Myth #1: Hot and Cold Machines Exist

The belief: slots go through hot streaks (paying frequently) and cold streaks (barely paying at all). If a machine hasn’t paid in a while, it’s “due” to hit.

I logged 200 sessions across 40 different slots. Tracked every spin, every win, every bonus. Looked for patterns.

Found nothing. Wins distributed randomly. A machine that paid three bonuses in 50 spins might go 300 spins without one next session. No pattern. No predictability.

The reality: Random number generators don’t have memory. Every spin is independent. Past results don’t influence future ones. That’s not how the math works.

Myth #2: Bet Size Affects RTP

Heard this constantly: “Bet max to unlock the real RTP.” People swear bigger bets trigger more bonuses or better payouts.

Tested it extensively with hacksaw slots since they show RTP clearly in game info. Played the same slot at minimum bet (£0.10) for 500 spins, then max bet (£5) for 500 spins. Tracked return percentage on both.

Minimum bet: 94.2% return over the session. Max bet: 93.8% return. Basically identical, well within normal variance.

The reality: RTP is fixed regardless of bet size. Bigger bets just mean bigger wins and bigger losses – the percentage stays the same.

Myth #3: Casinos Tighten Slots on Weekends

The logic sounds reasonable: more players on weekends means casinos can afford to pay less. They flip a switch Friday night and reduce RTP until Monday.

This one’s pure paranoia. Casinos can’t change RTP on demand. Game providers control that, not individual casinos. Slots are certified at specific RTP levels. Changing them requires re-certification.

I tracked weekend versus weekday results over three months anyway. Lost 4.8% of total wagered on weekends, 5.1% on weekdays.

The reality: Your bad weekend sessions are just variance, not manipulation.

Myth #4: Stopping Reels Early Changes Outcomes

Some players smash the spin button mid-spin, thinking it affects results. Like they’re “catching” the reels at the right moment.

Tested this 300 times. Let reels spin naturally for 150 spins, stopped them early for 150 spins. Tracked win frequency and amounts.

Natural spins: 41 wins, £87 total. Early stops: 39 wins, £82 total. Essentially identical.

The reality: The outcome is determined the instant you press spin. The visual reel animation is just show. Stopping early only skips the animation – it doesn’t change what you’ve already won or lost.

Myth #5: Card Counting Works Online

Met someone who claimed they counted cards in online blackjack. Said they were up £2,000 using it.

This one’s absurd. Online blackjack shuffles after every hand (or every few hands). You can’t count a deck that gets reshuffled constantly.

Live dealer blackjack shuffles less frequently, but they use 6-8 deck shoes and cut off the last 1-2 decks. The count advantage becomes minimal.

The reality: Card counting requires deck penetration (playing deep into the shoe before reshuffling). Online and live dealer blackjack deliberately prevent this. The strategy doesn’t work.

Why These Myths Persist

Gambling creates pattern-seeking behavior. We want to believe we can find an edge, spot a system, predict outcomes.

Variance reinforces false beliefs. You bet big and win – “See? Big bets work better!” You play at night and hit a bonus – “Night sessions are definitely better!”

But correlation isn’t causation. Those wins would’ve happened at any bet size, any time of day.

What Does Matter

After testing all these myths, here’s what makes a real difference:

Game selection (pick high RTP). Bankroll management (stop when you should). Knowing when to walk away (can’t be taught by myths).

Everything else – timing, betting patterns, stopping reels early – it’s all fiction. Save your energy for the things that count.
