Fans of Windows, mark your calendars. Microsoft has revealed that Windows 11, its next and much-anticipated release, will be released on October 5, 2021.
Microsoft will start handing out Windows 11 as a free update to “eligible Windows 10 PCs” on that date. The first PCs with the operating system pre-installed should be ready for purchase later that month.
The free update to Windows 11 will be pushed out in a gradual and methodical manner, according to Microsoft. The update will be sent to new eligible devices first. It will then be rolled out to additional devices over time based on “intelligence models that evaluate hardware eligibility, dependability metrics, device age, and other variables that affect the upgrade experience.”
However, Microsoft anticipates that by mid-2022, all eligible machines will have received the Windows 11 update.
According to Microsoft, there are 11 key features of Windows 11:
- The new style and sounds are contemporary, fresh, clean, and lovely, instilling a feeling of peace and comfort in you.
- With Start, we’ve prioritized you and your content. Start makes use of the cloud and Microsoft 365 to display you your latest files regardless of whatever device you were using to view them.
- Snap Layouts, Snap Groups, and Desktops provide you even more options for multitasking and making the most of your screen real estate.
- Microsoft Teams chat, which is integrated into the taskbar, gives you a quicker method to communicate with the people you care about.
- Widgets, a new customized feed driven by AI, gives you a quicker way to get the content you care about, and you can get more done on the web with Microsoft Edge’s world-class performance, speed, and productivity capabilities.
- With technologies like DirectX12 Ultimate, DirectStorage, and Auto HDR, Windows 11 is the greatest Windows yet for gaming and unleashes the full power of your system’s hardware. For one low monthly fee, Xbox Game Pass for PC or Ultimate gives you access to over 100 high-quality PC games to play on Windows 11. (Xbox Game Pass is not included.)
- Windows 11 has a redesigned Microsoft Store that makes it simpler to find and search for your favorite applications, games, shows, and movies in one secure place. We’re excited to continue our work with Amazon and Intel to bring Android applications to Windows 11 and the Microsoft Store; this will begin with a preview for Windows Insiders in the coming months.
- Windows 11 is the most inclusive version of Windows ever, with new accessibility features created for and by people with disabilities.
- For developers and artists, Windows 11 opens up new possibilities. We’re expanding the Store to enable more developers and independent software vendors (ISVs) to submit their applications, enhancing native and web app development with new developer tools, and making it simpler for you to update the appearance and feel of all of our app designs and experiences.
- With touch, digital pen, and voice interaction, Windows 11 is designed for speed, efficiency, and better experiences.
- Windows 11 is the operating system for hybrid work, bringing new experiences that operate the way you do, are safe by design, and are simple to install and maintain for IT. Businesses may also try Windows 11 in preview today via Azure Virtual Desktop, or wait until it’s available in general release by using the new Windows 365.
Users who don’t want to upgrade to Windows 11 may continue to use Windows 10 for a few more years, since the current version of the operating system will be maintained until October 14, 2025. Later this year, Windows 10 will also get a major feature upgrade.
Today, we’re excited to announce that Windows 11 will begin shipping on October 5, 2021. On this day, qualifying Windows 10 PCs will get a free upgrade to Windows 11, and PCs that come pre-loaded with Windows 11 will become available for purchase. Windows 11 is a new Windows experience that is intended to bring you closer to the things you care about.
